HI TOOL® Harmonic Isolation tool vibrational shock reduction in a lateral well with Rotary Steerable system
Customer challenges

An operator requested the 800 series HI TOOL® Harmonic Isolation Tool to mitigate the harmful vibration harmonics observed when drilling a lateral 8.5’’ section. The goal was to protect the MWD tool while also increasing the overall efficiency of the drilling operation.

Expro Excellence

The HI TOOL® was positioned above the HEL MWD tool. This would decouple the drill-string and upper BHA from the important directional tools in the lower BHA. By protecting the lower BHA the RSS would track truer; the bit would stay directly engaged to the formation enabling a more efficient drill.

Value to client

The use of the HI TOOL® in the 8.5’’ section successfully protected the HEL MWD tool from vibrational harmonics. Mitigating these vibrations also allowed for a decrease in weight on bit (WOB) while drilling but maintaining a higher ROP compared to an offset well.
